You know the sound already. A fan humming in the corner. Static from an old TV. Rain flattening into one steady wash against the window. People have slept to sounds like these for as long as fans and radios have existed. But open a sleep app and you'll find white, pink, and brown noise listed side by side, and the obvious question follows: what's actually different, and does it matter?

More than you might think. The three sound noticeably different, and the research behind each points in a different direction.

What the colors actually mean

Noise "colors" describe how sound energy spreads across frequencies, borrowed from the way light works.

White noise contains equal energy at every frequency, the way white light contains every color. To the ear, it's a bright, steady hiss — untuned radio, a sharp shower spray.

Pink noise rolls off as frequency rises, with equal energy in each octave. Because our ears perceive octaves rather than raw frequencies, pink noise sounds more balanced — softer and deeper, like steady rain or wind moving through trees.

Brown noise (named after Brownian motion, not the color) drops off even more steeply. What's left is a low rumble: distant thunder, a waterfall heard from indoors, the drone of an airplane cabin.

Play them back to back and the family resemblance breaks apart. White is the sharpest, pink sits in the middle, and brown is all depth.

White noise: the masking workhorse

White noise earns its keep through masking. It raises the floor of sound in your room, so a door slamming or a car passing creates a smaller jump against the background — and a smaller jump is less likely to register while you sleep. It isn't doing anything to you; it's doing something to your acoustic environment.

There is research here. In a 2017 study published in Frontiers in Neurology, Messineo and colleagues had healthy sleepers spend nights in a simulated noisy hospital environment. When broadband white noise played, participants fell asleep about 38% faster than they did against the disruptive noise alone. It was a small study under specific conditions, but the result fits the masking logic: smooth out the peaks, and sound has less to snag on.

If your nights are punctuated by unpredictable noise — a busy street, thin walls, a snoring partner — white noise is the classic starting point.

Pink noise: the one with the memory research

Pink noise is essentially the sound of rain, and it carries the most intriguing research of the three. In a 2017 Northwestern University study published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, researchers played short pulses of pink noise timed precisely to older adults' slow brain waves during sleep. On the nights with stimulation, participants showed increased slow-wave activity and recalled more word pairs the next morning.

One honest caveat: that experiment used carefully timed pulses delivered in a lab, not a continuous track playing all night. Pressing play on pink noise at home doesn't recreate it. What the study does suggest is that the sleeping brain remains responsive to sound, and that gentle low-frequency sound interacts with it in ways researchers are still mapping.

Beyond the lab, many people simply find pink noise easier to live with than white — less hiss, more rainfall.

Brown noise: deep, popular, under-studied

Brown noise deserves a plain admission: it has the least formal research behind it. Its popularity is recent and mostly anecdotal — many people, notably in ADHD communities, describe it as grounding, like the world getting quieter rather than a new sound being added.

What brown noise clearly does well is mask low-frequency intrusions: traffic rumble, HVAC systems, footsteps from the apartment above. And because it carries almost no high-frequency content, it lacks the hiss that makes white noise feel sharp to some ears. If white noise ever struck you as harsh, brown is the natural next thing to try.

How to choose

Worth knowing before you decide: a 2021 systematic review in Sleep Medicine Reviews examined studies of noise as a sleep aid and judged the overall evidence limited and mixed. That's not a reason to skip these sounds — it's a reason to let your own comfort be the tiebreaker.

A practical shortcut:

  • Sharp, unpredictable noises (doors, voices, sirens): start with white.
  • White feels hissy, or you want something closer to nature: try pink.
  • Low rumbles, or sensitivity to high frequencies: go brown.

Then run the one-minute test. Play each at low volume — quiet enough to talk over — and notice which one your attention stops snagging on. The right noise color is the one that disappears.
