
Your baby spent nine months in a place that was never quiet. Blood rushing past the placenta, a heartbeat drumming overhead, the muffled rise and fall of your voice — that was the soundtrack of life before birth. So when a newborn startles awake in a silent nursery at 3 a.m., it helps to remember: silence is the unfamiliar thing.
The womb is louder than you'd think
Researchers have actually listened in. Studies using intrauterine microphones — summarized by Gerhardt and Abrams in the Journal of Perinatology — describe a constant, low-frequency wash of sound: maternal blood flow, digestion, a steady heartbeat, and the outside world filtered through tissue and fluid. Estimates in that research put the baseline at roughly 70 to 90 decibels of deep, rumbling sound — closer to a running shower than a library.
Hearing develops in the second trimester, which means months of listening happen before the first breath. By the time your baby arrives, that whooshing rhythm isn't noise. It's home.
Why familiar sounds may soothe
Newborns show clear signs of remembering it. In a classic 1980 study published in Science, DeCasper and Fifer found that babies just days old changed their sucking patterns to hear their mother's voice — a voice they could only have learned in the womb.

Keep it safe: what the AAP says about volume

At maximum volume, every machine exceeded 50 decibels when measured at crib distance — and several could exceed 85 decibels, louder than the limits set for adult workplaces. The AAP has long advised keeping sound in hospital nurseries below 50 decibels, roughly the level of a quiet conversation.
The fixes are simple:
- Distance. Place the speaker or phone across the room, about 7 feet (2 meters) from the crib — never on the crib rail, inside the crib, or under the mattress.
- Volume. Use the lowest setting that gently masks household noise. A good test: if you can't comfortably talk over it, it's too loud.
- Duration. Consider a timer, so sound plays through the falling-asleep stretch instead of running at full volume all night.
